Algorithmic walks
Goldsmiths, 2024
“Descending the Gradient” is an algorithmic walking project that translates the computer algorithm "Gradient Descent" into directions for walking. The 'gradient descent’ algorithm, a method for mathematical optimization of data, is taken apart, and turned into a way of walking downhill, until reaching the lowest possible elevation point. Following the algorithmic logic, every step is an iteration, towards the direction of steepest slope. The goal is to arrive to the lowest possible point, in the most efficient way, in order to obtain the most optimal values.
The project challenges the notions of optimization, efficiency and speed in contemporary navigation. It draws a parallel between software generated routes and traditional stone laid paths as Infrastructures of movement, to explore their capacity to script and trace bodily movement in space.
The first walks took place in Tinos, Greece.
