Optimist / 2019

Outdoor installation for Saristra Festival in Palia Vlachata, Kefalonia

Palia Vlachata is an abandoned village in Kefalonia, deserted after the earthquake of 1953 destroyed it.

As a result, many left their homes to work in the shipping industry.

‘Optimist’ ( that borrows its name from the sailing boat) is site-specific installation that revolves around the idea of the revival of a shipwreck. As a symbol and a tool for moving forward, the sails are brought in the remains of this old building, temporarily reshaping it. They carry symbols that refer to a shipwreck and to the incident of the earthquake.
